National Wine Day is celebrated in Georgia on May 8th.
07.05.2026

At the initiative of the National Wine Agency of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, and pursuant to a decision of the Government of Georgia, National Wine Day is celebrated annually on May 8 to promote Georgian wine as a key element of the country’s identity and one of its most significant cultural treasures, highlighting its centuries-old history and rich winemaking traditions.
A conference will be held within the framework of National Wine Day, bringing together representatives of the Georgian wine industry, academic and scientific fields, as well as international professionals working in the wine sector. The event will be attended by the Director General of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), John Barker, who will visit Georgia specifically to participate in the celebrations marking the occasion.
The conference will focus on the achievements and ongoing activities of the scientific project “Georgian Vine and Wine Culture Research.” Experts and speakers from various countries will also discuss current trends in the global wine market, emerging challenges, the specific characteristics of export markets, and opportunities for strengthening positions within these markets.
Within the framework of National Wine Day, wine tastings, along with educational and entertainment activities dedicated to the 8,000-year history of Georgian winemaking, will be held at Gudiashvili Square. The celebrations will conclude at the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet Theater with a musical and theatrical performance.
Georgia is internationally recognized as the cradle of wine, with an uninterrupted tradition of viticulture and winemaking that spans 8,000 years. Archaeological discoveries, the unique qvevri winemaking method, and the distinguished role of wine in Georgian culture together form the foundation for Georgian wine to be regarded as one of the country’s most significant national treasures.
