According to the data of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), global wine consumption is currently at its lowest level since 1961. Over the past 10 years, wine consumption worldwide has been declining every year. In the conditions of intensified competition in the market, the competitive advantage of Georgian wine remains its uniqueness and quality. Through marketing activities, we create expectations among consumers about the uniqueness of Georgian wine, which must necessarily be reinforced by appropriate quality,” stated Levan Mekhuzla, Chairman of the National Wine Agency of Georgia.

During the 2026 harvest, in the event of a surplus crop and if the private sector does not express interest in purchasing grapes, the state has set the following purchase prices per 1 kg of grapes: For grapes harvested from vine varieties permitted under the Law of Georgia on Vine and Wine: Sugar content exceeding 20% — 1.30 GEL; Sugar content from 17% to 20% — 0.80 GEL (80 tetri); Sugar content not exceeding 17% — 0.30 GEL (30 tetri); For the Saperavi grape variety: Sugar content exceeding 22% — 1.50 GEL; Sugar content from 17% to 22% — 0.90 GEL (90 tetri); Sugar content not exceeding 17% — 0.30 GEL (30 tetri).

All winemakers will agree that quality starts with the vineyard and the grapes, we simply have no other way and no other alternative - only quality. We already introduced a price difference based on grape quality during the harvest last year. Experience has shown us that more emphasis needs to be placed on quality. On the one hand, there are challenges that we must address with social responsibility so that grapes do not go unsold, but social harvesting should not turn into a quantity-oriented process. Winegrowers must realize their responsibility to the future of the industry, take care of their vineyards now and obtain high-quality grapes," stated Levan Mekhuzla.
