The first festival of Georgian amber wine, “Amber Georgia,” was held in New York.
With the support of the National Wine Agency and organized by the Association “Natural Wine,” the first festival of Georgian amber wine, “Amber Georgia,” took place in the well-known exhibition space “Industry City” in New York, USA.
At the festival, approximately 30 wineries from different regions of Georgia presented their amber wines.
“One of the main objectives of the National Wine Agency is to promote the popularization of Georgian wine in international markets. Today’s event contributes to strengthening the export position of Georgian amber wine in the U.S. market. The number of visitors at the festival exceeded all expectations, which indicates the growing interest in amber wine among American wine professionals, consumers, and commercial sector representatives,” stated Elene Kiknadze, Head of the Exhibition and Event Coordination Division of the National Wine Agency.
The initiative to hold the amber wine festival was proposed to the National Wine Agency by the Association “Natural Wine.”
“This is a historic day for Georgian wine, because it is the first festival of Georgian wine held in the United States. For years, we have participated in various festivals; however, now is the time when a Georgian wine festival has been held in the U.S. We hope that this event will provide many Georgian winemakers with the opportunity to increase sales of Georgian wine on the American market,” said Zurab Mgvdliashvili, winemaker and Director of the Association “Natural Wine.”
The Georgian wine festival in New York was attended by the Consul General of Georgia in New York, Maia Bartaia. Georgian winemakers also received support for presenting their wines in the United States from the Consulate General of Georgia in New York.
Georgian amber wine, which technologically means wine fermented with grape skins, under the name “Wine made with prolonged maceration on the grape skins”, has been added to the list of special wines of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV). Previously, the list of OIV special wines included only 7 categories: “Sparkling,” “Semi-sparkling,” “Fortified,” “Liqueur,” “Naturally Sweet Wines,” “Icewine,” and “Under Flor (yeast) Aging.”
“The wine made with prolonged maceration on the pomace” became the 8th on the list of OIV special wines.
In October of the current year, also with the aim of promoting amber wine, at the international amber wine exhibition “Orange Glou Fair” held in New York, and organized by the National Wine Agency and American marketing company Colangelo & Partners, around 15 wines from eight Georgian wineries were presented.
With the aim of increasing the export potential of Georgian wine and diversifying markets, with the financial and organizational support of the National Wine Agency, in the first 10 months of 2025 Georgian wine was presented at 29 exhibitions-festivals and around 250 tastings-seminars in the U.S., Europe, and Asia, in a total of about 20 countries.
