Harvest Nears Completion in Racha
As of October 15, 2.2 thousand tons of grapes have been processed in the Ambrolauri municipality of Racha.
A total of 1,200 winegrowers have delivered their harvest, and around 50 wineries are participating in the process.
“Harvest in Racha is nearing completion; most of the crop has already been processed. This year, we have achieved a record harvest—more than 2,000 tons. The peak period of the harvest has passed, and winegrowers are delivering their grapes without interruption. This year, grapes in Racha are of particularly high quality, with an average sugar content of 22%, which gives us reason to say that wines made from this year’s harvest will be exceptional and of premium quality,” said the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla.
To encourage private sector involvement in the harvest process in the Racha region and to ensure the organized processing of the crop, the government has implemented a subsidy program. The subsidy will be provided to all companies that purchase and process at least 3 tons of Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties harvested within the “Khvanchkara” microzone and pay winegrowers no less than 8 GEL per kilogram. The amount of state subsidy that wine companies in the Racha-Lechkhumi region will receive is 4 GEL per kilogram, both for Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties.
To ensure varietal accuracy and maintain the quality of the protected designation of origin wine “Khvanchkara,” ampelographers monitor the grapes delivered at all receiving points. In addition, special checkpoints have been set up at the entrances to the region to prevent the import of grapes from other municipalities and the mixing of Mujuretuli and Aleksandrouli varieties.
