Levan Mekhuzla: “At this stage, grape delivery in Racha is proceeding without interruption”
As of October 14, around 2,000 tons of grapes have been processed in the Ambrolauri municipality of Racha.
“Grape delivery in Racha is proceeding smoothly. At the initial stage of the harvest, fearing a deterioration in weather conditions, the population harvested the grapes all at once. The amount of harvested grapes significantly exceeded the processing capacity of the wineries, which resulted in an increased flow of vehicles loaded with grapes to the factories. The population should take into account the existing winery capacities and obtain information from the village representative regarding the harvest coordination headquarters, which specifies when and to which winery they should deliver the grapes. At this stage, the issue has been resolved, and all harvested grapes have been fully accommodated,” said the Chairman of the National Wine Agency, Levan Mekhuzla.
According to Levan Mekhuzla, the 2025 harvest in Racha stands out both in terms of quantity and quality.
“We will have a record harvest in Racha. In recent years, the amount of processed grapes did not exceed 2,000 tons. This year, however, we can confidently state that more than 2,000 tons of grapes will be processed. It is noteworthy that the increase in quantity does not come at the expense of quality, as the grapes in Racha are healthy and well-conditioned, with an average sugar content of 22%, which allows us to say that this year Racha wines will be exceptional and of high quality, including the protected designation of origin wine ‘Khvanchkara,’” said Levan Mekhuzla.
To encourage the involvement of the private sector in the harvest process in the Racha region and to ensure the organized accommodation of the crop, the government has implemented a subsidy program. The subsidy will be granted to all companies that purchase and process at least 3 tons of Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties harvested within the “Khvanchkara” microzone and pay winegrowers no less than 8 GEL per kilogram. The amount of the state subsidy that wine companies in the Racha-Lechkhumi region will receive is 4 GEL per kilogram, both for Aleksandrouli and Mujuretuli grape varieties.
